Transcripts + Gregging.

Looking at the transcripts has certainly been entertaining. Even though we have only seen three transcripts, there has been such an array of strategies and situations but the one I see the most occurring is the teacher prompting and asking questions. They are never lecturing and telling the students what they want to know, but instead, they are probing through their knowledge through conversation in the classroom. I find this very intriguing. However, I do notice that if none of the students are talking, it appears that all of them are talking.
When it comes to my own classroom, I want it to look similar. I want to have class discussion and let the students learn from each other, not just me. I want them to ask questions about things they don't understand and more importantly, I want them to learn in a new way. Not just from lecture. I can imagine this happening but I understand that class will not, oftentimes, go as I plan...a lot of gregging may occur.

  1. I like your open mindedness about gregging. Some classes just require some gregging, and I definitely think Greg's class was one of them. The students in the class just seemed to have difficulty accessing the discussion questions, and Greg seemed to make it easier for them by getting them more interested and bringing the material to a personal place they could relate to. Students, and the teacher, seemed grateful to have Greg around to lighten a very thought-provoking discussion and get the expressive juices flowing.

  2. Great ideas, Jourdan! I totally agree. I think there is so much more that can be accomplished in a classroom setting than simply a teacher's lecture...I often learn as much from my fellow classmates as I do from the teacher. Thank you for pointing this out!

  3. I love the idea of students learning from each other. I think i\n generally as young leaders, teachers, etc., we tend to feel uncomfortable delegating power and information to others. We barely have confidence in ourselves, and even less confidence at times in those we lead or teach. Regardless though, I think it's evident from these transcripts that our students are a viable source of information and learning. I know I'm challenged to allow my students to take the reigns at times and am excited to see where this leads.

  4. Good stuff here Jourdan, I would agree with most of what you are saying. However, what i want to know is how you would deal with a situation in which "gregging" occurs. As an observer, I have noticed several Gregger's in our own 338 class, how do you suppose you would go about handling this? How do you think Branch does at handling these situations, and how can we (as educators) prevent them?

    anyhow, good stuff.
